BERLIN 1

THE CITY AND THE POLITICAL
proposed by kentoncard

Politics is now called post-democratic. Neoliberal capitalism has developed technologies of management whereby only legitimate knowledges are considered relevant. The polis is dead, replaced by the post-political city.
This class hopes to create dialogue between theories of "the political" and architectural practices. How do theories and practices converge upon our ecological and economic crises? How do they confront conventional politics, philosophy, ecology, urbanism, or architecture? We will read text and discuss. We will observe architectural processes and projects. We will also assemble and map the relationships between space and power, between architecture and politics, and between ideas and their physical cultural embodiment.
The first class will be at The Public School on AUGUST 10, at 8pm. We will discuss Berlin architect Jesko Fezer's "Design for a Post-Neoliberal City." The text can be found here: http://www.e-flux.com/journal/view/153. We hope Fezer will join us in week two.
We hope to have four classes in August and perhaps continue the course in December. We will document the course here: http://citypolitical.blogspot.com/.
